Week 3 Post 3
The video ‘ The secret of Faqir” is about having faith in what you see with your own eyes and your own experiences. People are born into religions and just accept them because their parents do. Faqir believes there is no God.
What I thought the second video meant, from the quotes and the cartoon is about religion. There is no way truly prove God exists. Religion is a waste of time. You could read the bible 50 times, go to church every day, but you’ll never be any different from the next guy. A afterlife in heaven is unattainable.

Week 3 Post 2
The reading that interested me the most was David Lane's. People need to look beyond the text and look for the deeper meaning. I used to read books as a child and just get literal meanings out of them. Now, as an adult I try to find hidden themes and messages.
Books and movies are much more enjoyable if you really understand them. I work at a video store and a good movie with different meanings is "The Matrix". For some people it's good because of the action scenes and the effects but they don't realize the philosphical aspects.

I disagree with most of what Dyson said in the video. I don’t believe he is religious at all. What it sounds like he’s doing is hanging out with a bunch of friends and listening to good music. His reasoning behind it was religion having history. Maybe I missed something there.
I also disagree about how atoms could have a mind of their own. I don’t think atoms have a mind. Some things happen at random but that doesn’t mean they have a choice. He talks about a theory that the universe has a mind of its own is interesting. The world is so friendly to life. How did this universe come to the way it became? Water itself is a miracle. It feeds all life. There are millions of different species instead of few.

Week 2 Post 3
I found eleven to be an extremely powerful short film. I actually got goosebumps at the end. It felt like a true story. It wasn’t though right? After the tragic events of 9/11, fear was set into many people. This fear was turned into hate. Where would the hate be directed towards?
There are ignorant people in the world that will stereotype one group of people thinking that they are all the same. The fact is that many people in the muslim community were have been in America for such a long time and were saddened just as much as the next person by the attacks on 9/11.
Another interesting theme to the film is stereotyping people just by the way they look. Just because the first guy wearing murdered wore a turban, he was thought to be Muslim. People need to do research and learn about all types of people there are. I am Filipino but people have called me Chinese before. I do not get offended, but I do try to educate them. Filipinos are very different from Chinese people just like Malik Shareef was different from Muslims.

Willey sounds like an awesome teacher. He gives exciting demos that would actually interest every student. Classes that have demos and live in-your-face- shows help students learn. Students need hands on learning. In science classes you have labs, not just lecture.
I thought the field guide for critical thinking by Lett was interesting. People will believe anything these days. A product will show someone claiming to be a doctor and saying how the product works. Most of the time these are actors. Some times a diet pill will say works best with diet and exercise. The dieter takes the pill, diets, and exercises and loses weight. They really believe it’s the pill while its really the diet and excersise. People must use the scientific method in everyday life to find out what is real and not real.

Week 2 Post 1
Evolution is not something I believe in. I’m a religious person and have been going to church twice a week my whole life. It’s interesting to learn about Darwinism and evolution. I think its good for people to learn about different beliefs because it makes your faith stronger.
The video with John Maynard Smith was difficult to understand. The loud sounds coming from Smith were distracting, especially because I use headphones. The parts that interested me were the animals in conflict and the different stages of evolution. The interviewer did a good job and it was obvious that he knew his stuff.

Week 1 Post 3
The video about karma was short and to the point. It starts out with the definition of karma, the shows different people being friend and being mean. The people being mean have something bad happen to them. The one lady being nice ends up winning the lotto. Karma means if you are a good person, good things will happen to you. If you are a bad person, bad things will happen to you.
I, personally do not believe in karma. Of course, whenever something bad happens to you after you have done something bad, you think karma. I believe that these are merely coincidences. Its hard to believe in karma when you see extremely bad people that are wealthy.
